Sydney-based director Geoff Burton establishes a remarkable intimacy with his subjects in this extremely moving documentary looking at the work of Liverpool Hospital's Intensive Care Unit. The film focuses on one patient: Mohammad Hossain had three months earlier arrived with his wife Nahida as a migrant from Bangladesh when he was admitted to the unit and diagnosed with tuberculous meningitis. The film documents the daily struggle of the staff to help Hossain and the bewildered experience of Nahida, who is pregnant and speaks imperfect English. Viewers will feel deeply for Nahida as she maintains her bedside vigil and attempts to enlist support from her brother in Bangladesh. This is humanistic, observational doco-making at its absolute best.
